Arriba, Arriba!

It’s time to ride the wave of Mexican momentum in 2017, with the flavours from more American style tex-mex to Central American street food sweeping across the UK.

A survey of more than 2, 000 consumers saw 30% of UK families buy or try Mexican food over the course of a year, while Mexican recipe hits on Waitrose’s website increased by 867% for pork fajitas in 2016.  Clearly, there’s an appetite for it!

There are a number of reasons why Mexican cuisine is one of the most popular choices for consumers across the UK.

Quick

People are busy, like, really busy. Working lives are hectic while people battle to juggle their career plans with social lives and this is blurring the line between meals, with many choosing to snack as they go than sit down and eat a proper meal. Mexican style street food is quick and easy; tap into on-the-go diners by offering

Customisable

Consumers, and millennials especially, are seeking authenticity and individuality when it comes to their food choices [link to hot dog personalisation blog]. One of the great things about many of the popular Mexican choices, tacos, burritos, fajitas and nachos is their adaptability. Adding pork to any of these dishes adds quality, while extras like guacamole, sour cream, refried beans, cheese and salsa will personalise dishes and give diners a chance to make the dish their own.

Sharers

In a similar vein to personalisation, eating is becoming more and more about the experience than the food especially, again, with millennials. Creating social occasions that can be enjoyed around food is a sure-fire way to provide customers with an evening they’ll be talking to friends and families about for weeks to come. Mexican dishes lend themselves perfectly to this; nachos, fajitas and smaller, street food dishes can be eaten between groups and accommodate a fun, social environment.

So, whether you intend on treating customers to a quick and easy tex-mex menu, more traditional street-food flavours and dishes or simply adding some favourites to your existing offer, this is a trend really worth exploring to attract new customers and excite existing ones!
